The Director General and CEO of the National Board for Technology Incubation (NBTI), Dr. Kazeem Kolawole Raji, has called on Nigerians to use the country’s domain name, .ng, to enhance data sovereignty and security.
Speaking at an event in Morocco, Dr. Raji highlighted Galaxy Backbone Limited’s efforts to protect Nigerian data, stating they are among the best globally.
Galaxy Backbone Limited, a government agency, manages government services, offshore data services, and promotes data sovereignty across Nigeria. The agency has created a shared platform for Federal Government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to host their data securely and comply with data protection regulations.
This call comes as data privacy concerns grow in Nigeria. Recently, Paradigm Initiative raised alarms about unregistered websites accessing Nigerians’ personal and financial data. The group served a pre-action notice to several government agencies, including the National Identity Management Commission and the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, over alleged data breaches.
The Nigeria Data Protection Commission is enforcing data protection laws and investigating suspected data breaches. Embracing the .ng domain is seen as a step towards securing Nigerian data and promoting digital trust.
