The Nigeria Police Affairs Minister, Muhammad Dingyadi, has said that the insecurity situation bedeviling the country would be worsened if everyone in the country is allowed to bear arms.
The Minister stated this while taking questions from Newsmen at a Media parley with Crime Correspondent’s Association of Nigeria in his office in Abuja on Thursday
The Minister was reacting to the call from the Majority Leader of the Nigeria House of Representatives, Ado Doguwa, who last week advocated for Nigerians to be allowed to bear arms in self-defense due to the deteriorating security situation in the country.
In his words, “ I won’t throw my weight behind those calling for Nigerians to bear arms, We are even trying to ensure that we minimize the circulation of firearms among most Nigerians. There is a need to restrict this to people who are supposed to own them and those who have been trained to use them and people who have access to use them. Otherwise, if you make it all people’s affair, it will worsen the situation. This is my honest opinion. I don’t share that view at this moment, I don’t support that.”
Speaking on the recent security challenges faced by Nigerians the honorable minister charged communities leaders and peace-loving members in different communities in the country to cooperate with the securities agencies in the ongoing efforts to fighting bandits and other elements threatening the peace and security of lives and properties.
He noted that policing infrastructure is currently receiving attention, through the recent deployment of drones by the Nigeria Police, for surveillance of vulnerable locations, and the deployment of additional Explosive Ordinance Devices.
The minister who also commented on the need to boost the morals of police officers also noted that efforts are in the final stages to ensure that the implementation of salary increments for police officers across the country becomes a reality in no distant time.
