The spirit of Nelson Mandela was celebrated in London as diplomats, ministers, academics, artists and community leaders gathered at the University of East London for the opening of A Life’s Journey, an exhibition honouring the South African icon ahead of Nelson Mandela International Day.

The exhibition became a remarkable example of determination and collaboration. According to organiser Nic Careem, the journey began less than four weeks earlier when he received a call from Batho Malopo, First Secretary at the South African High Commission in London, asking if he could secure a venue and deliver a major Mandela exhibition.
“At the time, there was very little funding, no confirmed venue, no programme, no speakers and less than a month to make it happen. Many would have said it was impossible. But Nelson Mandela taught us that impossible is often just the beginning,” Careem reflected.

Minister Gayton McKenzie
Working alongside the University of East London, South Africa’s Department of Sport, Arts and Culture and numerous partners, the team transformed that vision into a successful international event attended by almost 200 guests.
Delivering the keynote address, South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, urged the international community to embrace Mandela’s message of reconciliation, dialogue and unity in an increasingly divided world. He encouraged young people to understand Mandela’s sacrifices and reminded the audience that everyone has the ability to find “a Mandela within us” through compassion and courageous leadership.

The evening featured the Letter to Mandela Project, inspiring performances by young people and musicians, while South African ministers added handwritten messages to the historic House of Commons Nelson Mandela Legacy Book, reaffirming Mandela’s enduring influence across generations.
The exhibition also launched a wider international legacy programme, including the Nelson Mandela Legacy Gala Super Ball and Unsung Hero Awards in India next year, with future events planned for New York and Cape Town to raise funds for children’s charities.
Among the distinguished guests were South African High Commissioner Jeremiah Nyamane Mamabolo, Minister of Tourism Patricia de Lille, Members of Parliament, diplomats, educators, artists and community leaders. Also in attendance were Mentoring Commandant Alistair of NIDMECORP, and former National Leader who held a cordial side discussion with Minister McKenzie on culture, youth and Africa–diaspora partnerships, former Super Eagles players, a leading Nigerian AI analytics executive, and other invited international guests, reflecting the exhibition’s broad global appeal.
