Plateau State, the twelfth largest Nigerian state, situated near the center of Nigeria’s capital, boasts a landscape adorned with hills encompassing the Jos Plateau, its capital city, and the plateau itself. Revered as “The Home of Peace and Tourism,” Plateau State is renowned for its scenic beauty.
Manchester, the largest city in Northern England, renowned for its footballing prowess and cultural diversity, recently welcomed His Excellency Barr. Caleb Manasseh Muftang, the Governor of Plateau State. On April 30, 2024, Governor Muftang engaged in a dynamic interactive session with indigenes, stakeholders, and friends of Nigerian leadership, focusing on opportunities and good governance.
The event commenced with a heartfelt opening prayer led by Dr. Ife Akintunde at the esteemed Good News House in Manchester. Dr. Joshua Jama adeptly assumed the role of Master of Ceremonies, orchestrating the proceedings with finesse.
Rev. Dr. Gideon Para-Mallam, the esteemed founder of The Para-Mallam Peace Foundation, addressed the audience, emphasizing the importance of engaging the Diaspora to address the challenges facing Plateau State. He lauded the state’s abundant resources, particularly its economic and tourism potential, and underscored the advocacy role of the visit in amplifying the voices of those affected by hardship and insecurity in the region.
Governor Muftang delivered a compelling presentation, expressing gratitude for the warm reception in Manchester. He emphasized faith and optimism in Nigeria’s future, envisioning a nation that emerges stronger from past adversities. Calling for collective effort, he urged Nigerians in the Diaspora to actively participate in nation-building endeavors, fostering solidarity and engagement.
The Governor candidly addressed the state’s financial and security challenges, highlighting initiatives aimed at revitalizing the economy and enhancing security measures. Despite facing inherited debts, his administration had made significant progress in increasing the state’s internally generated revenue (IGR), signaling a promising financial outlook. Regarding security, he stressed the importance of concerted action to confront prevailing threats, appealing for prayers and support for lasting peace.
During the interactive session, Governor Muftang elaborated on his government’s priorities, spanning healthcare, education, agriculture, and infrastructure development. He outlined efforts to leverage Plateau State’s agricultural potential through strategic partnerships and initiatives aimed at boosting productivity and mitigating post-harvest losses.
The event attracted a diverse audience, including professionals, community leaders, and students, reflecting broad interest in Plateau State’s development. Notable attendees included Mr. Ian Peacock, CEO of Kingstead, and Cllr. Patience Bentu, among others. The event’s success was attributed to collaborative efforts, with organizations such as NCiD-UK, OFNC-UK, and PSJ-UK partnering with The Para-Mallam Peace Foundation and the Plateau State Government’s Office for Development, Partnerships, and Diaspora Engagement.
