Uncertainty has gripped the political landscape in Kano State following reports that Deputy Governor Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo has stepped down from office, a development yet to be officially confirmed by the state government.
The claim of resignation was contained in a statement issued by the Kwankwasiyya political movement and signed by its spokesperson, Dr. Habibu Sale Mohammed. According to the statement, the decision was reached after careful consideration and was aimed at preserving stability in the state’s governance.
It noted that prevailing circumstances had hindered the deputy governor’s ability to fully discharge his duties, stressing that the move should not be construed as an admission of wrongdoing.
“This decision, though difficult, has been taken in the overall interest of the people and the stability of governance in Kano State,” the statement read.
The development comes against the backdrop of rising political tension, particularly following impeachment proceedings initiated by the Kano State House of Assembly over allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust.
Lawmakers had accused Gwarzo of financial impropriety linked to his tenure as Commissioner for Local Government, including the alleged diversion of council funds. However, the Kwankwasiyya movement has consistently defended him, maintaining that the funds in question—reportedly about ₦1.1 billion—were duly approved for state projects.
Political analysts also link the crisis to widening cracks within the state’s leadership, particularly tensions between the deputy governor and Abba Kabir Yusuf, reportedly triggered by shifting political alignments.
Despite the circulating reports, the Kano State Government has remained silent, leaving the situation unclear and fueling speculation across political circles.
If confirmed, the resignation could signal a significant shift in Kano’s political dynamics, with potential implications for governance and party cohesion in one of northern Nigeria’s most politically influential states.
