Channels Television presenter, Seun Okinbaloye, has said he is not scared of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, following the minister’s controversial comment about him.
Wike had earlier said he would have “broken his TV screen and shot” Okinbaloye over the journalist’s comments warning against the dangers of a one-party system in Nigeria.
The statement generated widespread criticism, with Amnesty International condemning the remark and describing it as dangerous and inappropriate.
Reacting to the development, Okinbaloye said hostile or violent language has no place in a democratic society and should never be used against people with opposing views.
He also disclosed that Wike later called him to explain that his comment was not intended as a direct threat.
Despite the clarification, the television anchor stressed that public office holders must be mindful of their statements, especially when responding to criticism or differing opinions.
He said, “Let me make it clear: I am not afraid and I will never be intimidated. We may not always agree, but disagreement must never lead to threats or hostility.”
Okinbaloye added that he would continue carrying out his duties as a journalist by asking important questions and holding leaders accountable, noting that democracy depends on freedom of expression and the ability of citizens to express different opinions.
