As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, the former Director General of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Judiciary to rise to their constitutional responsibilities in safeguarding the nation’s democracy.
He stressed that democracy can only thrive when institutions are strong, impartial, and committed to the rule of law. According to him, INEC must not only abide by its own rules but also ensure that political parties are given the respect and fair treatment they deserve, without bias or manipulation.
“Don’t destroy our democracy, Judiciary must respect the decision of the political parties according to their law. Allow political parties to thrive and to implement their constitution. Since the Supreme Court has ruled that internal party matters are not subject to judicial interference and courts should not interfere in internal party affairs.” he warned.
He further appealed to the judiciary to remain the last hope of the common man by upholding justice, fairness, and transparency in all electoral matters, especially as the nation moves closer to a critical political transition. And they should not compromise the ethics of their profession, no matter how many pressures or influences come their way.
“The survival of our democracy depends on the strength of our institutions. INEC must ensure credible elections and the judiciary must be bold enough to defend the will of the people. This is not the time to compromise, it is the time to stand firm in the interest of Nigeria,” he stated.
He urged all stakeholders, including political parties, civil society organizations, security agencies, and the media, to play their roles responsibly in order to guarantee a free, fair, and transparent electoral process in 2027.
