The race for the Umunneochi constituency seat in the Abia State House of Assembly gained significant momentum on Saturday as Engr. Simon Chukwunonyerem Obiechile formally declared his intention to represent the area, sparking a major policy shift among community power brokers.
Speaking at a strategic stakeholders’ meeting held at the residence of Ichie Emeka Okpara in Umuogele Amuda Isuochi, Engr. Obiechile made his ambitions known to a cross-section of influential community and political leaders. His declaration served as the catalyst for a broader deliberation on the future of leadership in the region.
The “Accountability” Ultimatum
In an immediate response to the declaration, the gathered stakeholders issued a landmark resolution: any candidate seeking the community’s blessing—including Engr. Obiechile and future aspirants—must now enter into a written agreement with the people.
This “social contract” is designed to ensure that campaign promises are legally or morally binding, with the stakeholders vowing that any politician who fails to deliver on their word will be denied a second term.
Beyond the declaration, the Umunneochi leaders established several “red lines” for the upcoming political cycle:
End of “Emergency” Politics: The community resolved to support only “home boys”—candidates with deep, verifiable ties to the local soil—rather than those who only appear during election seasons.
Character Over Party: Stakeholders declared that party affiliation is no longer a winning factor. Support will move to candidates of proven integrity, regardless of their political platform.
The Youth Mandate: In a move toward generational balance, it was unanimously agreed that positions such as the House of Assembly, Council Chairman, and Commissioners should henceforth be reserved for the youth.
Zoning and Strategic Transition: The meeting also brought clarity to the existing zoning arrangement. The stakeholders reaffirmed that the House of Assembly seat is currently zoned to Zone 2 to complete its eight-year term.
Following this period, the assembly resolved that the seat should transition to Umuchieze to maintain equity and peace within the local government area.
The session concluded with a unified stance that the political future of Umunneochi will no longer be left to chance, but will be governed by transparency, fresh perspectives, and an unwavering commitment to the grassroots.
