The Emir of Gumel, His Highness Ahmad Muhammad Sani II, CON, has died in Cairo, Egypt, at the age of 83, after a protracted illness.
The Jigawa State Government confirmed the monarch’s death on Thursday, describing it as a major loss to the Gumel Emirate, Jigawa State and Nigeria.
In a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Malam Bala Ibrahim, the government said the 16th Emir of Gumel died in Cairo after spending 46 years on the throne.
“Inna Lillahi Wainna Ilaihin Raji:in. The Jigawa State Government regrets to announce, with profound sorrow, the passing of His Highness, the Emir of Gumel, Alhaji Ahmed Muhammad Sani, CON,” the statement said.
Born on December 12, 1942, the late monarch ascended the throne in 1980 and became one of the longest-serving traditional rulers in the state.
During his four-and-a-half decades on the throne, Emir Ahmad Muhammad Sani was widely recognised for his role in promoting peace, community development and the welfare of his subjects.
The state government said the monarch devoted his reign to improving the lives of people in the Gumel Emirate, particularly through initiatives aimed at improving healthcare, increasing school enrolment and strengthening peace and security.
“The 16th Emir of Gumel was a beacon of wisdom, offering invaluable counsel and tirelessly working towards improving health outcomes, increasing school enrolment, and fostering peace and security across the state,” the government said.
It added that his contributions to the development and welfare of his people had left a lasting legacy that would be deeply missed.
The government extended its condolences to the royal family, the people of Gumel Emirate, the Jigawa State Council of Chiefs and residents across the state.
The statement said arrangements for the monarch’s funeral would be announced by the Emir’s palace and subsequently communicated to the public.
The government prayed for the repose of the late monarch’s soul, asking Allah to forgive his shortcomings, accept his good deeds and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus.
