ECOWAS has issued a firm condemnation of the unfolding political crisis in the Republic of Guinea-Bissau following the interruption of the country’s electoral process by elements of the armed forces. The regional bloc described the action as an unconstitutional coup d’état that poses a grave threat to Guinea-Bissau’s constitutional order and wider regional stability.
In its statement, the Chair of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government commended the people of Guinea-Bissau for peacefully exercising their democratic rights during the presidential and legislative elections held on 23 November 2025. ECOWAS stressed that the military intervention unlawfully disrupted the process at a crucial stage, in violation of the constitutional timetable.
The Authority reaffirmed ECOWAS’ strict zero-tolerance policy for unconstitutional changes of government and expressed readiness to take all necessary measures to ensure the rapid restoration of democratic governance. It also raised serious concern over the reported arrests of President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, senior officials, and electoral personnel, insisting on their immediate and unconditional release with full guarantees for their safety.
ECOWAS underscored that the leaders of the coup bear full responsibility for the security and wellbeing of all detainees, residents, foreign nationals, and diplomatic personnel. The organisation called for the swift resumption and conclusion of the electoral process without coercion, interference, or obstruction.
The statement further urged political actors, civil society groups, and the general public to remain calm, exercise restraint, and avoid any actions that could heighten tensions or destabilise the country. ECOWAS reiterated its unwavering commitment to supporting all stakeholders in safeguarding peace, upholding democratic principles, and defending the aspirations of the people of Guinea-Bissau.
The regional bloc concluded by affirming that it will continue to monitor developments closely as efforts to restore constitutional order progress.
