Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has charged newly inducted ambassadors and high commissioners-designate to advance the country’s strategic interests using the government’s “4Ds” frameworkDemocracy, Development, Demography, and Diaspora.
She delivered the directive in Abuja at the opening of an induction programme organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to prepare envoys for diplomatic postings abroad.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu emphasised the importance of economic diplomacy, urging the envoys to attract foreign investment, promote trade and tourism, and support Nigeria’s economic diversification agenda.
She noted that their appointments reflect the confidence of President Bola Tinubu, adding that their conduct and performance would significantly shape Nigeria’s international reputation.
“As representatives of Nigeria abroad, your actions must align with our foreign policy priorities anchored on the 4Ds,” she said.
The minister also underscored the need to prioritise Nigerians in the diaspora through efficient consular services, timely crisis response, and sustained engagement.
She warned against misuse of diplomatic privileges, stressing professionalism, discipline, and accountability in the management of foreign missions.
In a keynote address, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, described the appointments as a call to national service.
Speaking on behalf of President Tinubu, Akume said Nigeria’s foreign policy has been recalibrated to focus more on citizens’ welfare and national development outcomes.
He urged the envoys to deliver measurable results that would enhance Nigeria’s global standing, deepen bilateral ties, and expand opportunities for economic cooperation.
The induction programme will include sessions on diplomatic practice, mission administration, protocol, consular services, and multilateral engagement, equipping the envoys with the tools required for effective representation abroad.
