President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered urgent intervention on the deteriorating Benin-Agbor-Asaba road and the Ifaki-Kabba-Ado Ekiti corridor, following growing hardship faced by motorists and commuters.

The directive has prompted the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, to move swiftly to coordinate emergency measures aimed at restoring movement along the affected routes.

Umahi, who expressed concern over the worsening condition of the roads, said the Federal Government was determined to provide immediate relief while pursuing permanent solutions.

“President Tinubu, GCFR, has directed the Federal Ministry of Works to urgently intervene and ensure that necessary corrective actions are taken to restore movement on the affected roads as quickly as possible,” Umahi said.

The minister’s intervention follows weeks of severe gridlock and difficult travelling conditions, with some motorists reportedly spending several hours and, in some cases, days on the affected routes.

According to a statement by Francis Nwaze, Special Assistant to the Minister, Umahi directed the Minister of State for Works to lead a team of ministry officials to the Ifaki-Kabba-Ado Ekiti axis to assess the situation and commence urgent remedial works.

Nwaze said the assignment commenced at about 10 a.m. on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, with ministry officials already deployed to the affected areas.

While the intervention team moved into Ekiti and Kogi States, Umahi personally travelled to Benin, Edo State, alongside members of the National Assembly Works Committees to coordinate emergency measures on the Benin-Agbor-Asaba road.

The meeting in Benin brought together representatives of the Edo and Delta State Governments, as well as the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), to identify immediate solutions to the challenges confronting motorists along the strategic corridor.

Umahi also accepted responsibility for the situation and apologised to commuters who have endured prolonged delays and been stranded on the affected roads.

He assured road users that the Federal Government’s response would not be limited to temporary relief, stressing that emergency measures would be complemented by permanent interventions aimed at restoring the roads and improving their long-term reliability.
