AFCON 2023: Super Eagles Promised $7m Prize if Victorious

The Super Eagles of Nigeria squad stand to claim a hefty $7 million (N8.9 billion) reward should they emerge victorious in the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

Following a hard-fought victory over South Africa at the Stade de la Paix, Bouke, Nigeria secured their spot in the final of the 34th edition of AFCON, prevailing in a tense penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in regular play.

As a testament to their achievement, the Eagles have already secured $4 million for qualifying for the final tournament.

CAF president, Dr. Patrice Motsepe, had previously announced a 40 percent increase in prize money prior to the tournament’s commencement.

In a statement released on the football governing body’s website on January 4, it was confirmed that the winners of the tournament would receive $7 million, a $2 million increase from the previous edition in Cameroon.

Furthermore, the runners-up will now be awarded $4 million (N5 billion), while the losing semi-finalists, South Africa and DR Congo, will each receive $2.5 million. Additionally, each of the four quarter-finalists will take home $1.3 million.

Motsepe expressed satisfaction with the progress made in increasing prize money, stating, “CAF has made significant progress over the past two years in increasing the prize money of the AFCON and all its other major competitions.”

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu extended his congratulations via his verified Twitter handle, @officialABAT, commending the team’s performance and urging them to strive for victory in the tournament’s final.

The Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, who’s been following their progresses and in attendance, celebrated with the players and challenged them to bring home the trophy.

Meanwhile, Mentoring Cmdt Amb, Alistair of NIDMECORP, lauded the team’s victory, foreseeing it as a continuation of Nigeria’s past successes in 1980, 1994, and 2013, signaling a promising future for the squad.
