The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will today publish the personal particulars of presidential and National Assembly candidates for the 2027 general election, in line with its revised timetable and schedule of activities.

The publication marks another milestone in the electoral process and is aimed at promoting transparency by allowing Nigerians to scrutinise the credentials and other documents submitted by candidates.

Among those whose particulars are expected to be displayed are President Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC); former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC); and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, the candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC).

INEC had scheduled August 1, 2026, for the publication of the personal particulars of candidates contesting the presidential and National Assembly elections.

The exercise is in compliance with Section 29(3) of the Electoral Act, which provides that the Commission shall, within 21 days of receiving a candidate’s personal particulars, publish them in the constituency where the candidate intends to contest.

The documents, including academic qualifications and other credentials submitted by the candidates, will be made available for public scrutiny, giving Nigerians the opportunity to verify the information before the elections.

Following the publication of the candidates’ particulars, political parties are expected to officially commence campaigns for the 2027 presidential election on August 19, 2026.

NEDC: Over 60% of Roads, Bridges Destroyed by Boko Haram Now Restored

The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has announced that more than 60 per cent of roads and bridges destroyed by the Boko Haram insurgency across Nigeria’s North-East have been restored and are now functional.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, NEDC Managing Director Mohammed Alkali said the commission had made significant progress in rebuilding critical infrastructure under its stabilisation and recovery phase.

According to him, the commission has completed more than 300 kilometres of roads and over 50 bridges, restoring transport links, improving access to education and healthcare, facilitating trade and strengthening regional integration.

He listed major projects executed across the six North-East states, including roads, bridges, erosion control works and drainage infrastructure designed to reconnect communities devastated by insurgency and flooding.

Alkali said the commission’s interventions have also focused on rebuilding schools and health facilities, supporting displaced communities, restoring public services and enhancing security through strategic infrastructure projects.

He further disclosed that the NEDC Governing Board had approved a N100 billion investment to deploy 50 megawatts of renewable energy through solar mini-grids and distributed energy systems.

The investment, he said, builds on the commission’s Light Up the North-East Project, under which more than 100,000 solar-powered street lights have been installed across the region to improve security and stimulate economic activities.

Alkali noted that the initiative was necessitated by the region’s severe electricity deficit, pointing out that while Nigeria’s national electrification rate stands at about 58 per cent, only 39 per cent of the North-East population has access to electricity, leaving 61 per cent without reliable power supply.

He warned that the persistent energy gap continues to constrain industrialisation, agricultural processing, healthcare delivery, education, digital inclusion and private sector investment across the region.
