The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has described as astronomical the recent increase in electricity tariff by the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
NLC President, Mr. Omar Abdulwaheed who said this at a consultative meeting of NERC and Labour in Abuja added that the recent increase was worrisome as it did not take electricity consumers into account before the decision was made.
The NLC President insisted that the the consultative meeting called by NERC was like medicine after death.
Also, Vice President, NLC, Mr. Joe Ajero in his remarks liken the meeting to an act of abortion committed after pregnancy.
Mr. Ajero noted that the Power sector reform which eventually led to the privatisation of defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria concentrated more on the profit aspect of privatisation than the social service it renders to the public.
He added that instead of giving Nigerian power NERC went ahead to increase electricity tariff.
However, NERC Chairman, Mr. Sam Amadi earlier sued for understanding from various stakeholders in the power sector.
According to the Amadi, government will continue to protect the interest of electricity consumers.
It would be recalled that on June 1, 2014 the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission increased Electricity tariff.
