The FCT Police Command on Wednesday arrested one Mohammed Bello Kolo, 27 who had been parading himself as the Minister of the Nigeria Federal Capital Territory Mallam Muhammed Musa Bello.
The FCT Police Commissioner Bala Ciroma made the disclosure while briefing newsmen at the command headquarters Abuja.
Ciroma said the impersonator had been defrauding unsuspecting members of the public in the course of impersonating the Minister.
The commissioner of police said the impersonator had so far defrauded his victim of cash worth N52 million which he allegedly received in installments under pretence of giving them contracts.
According to the Police Boss, the suspects stated that he had access to classified information while he served at the Federal Capital Territory Administration(FCTA) during his National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) attachment.
Exhibits recovered from the impersonator include a 206 Peugeot with Registration Number ABJ 856 SU, one Tricycle with registration Number KEF 807 WT, one 55″ and 46 inches Samsung Plasma TV and one dining set.
” Other exhibits recovered are 10,000 watts Fireman Generator set and one Washing Machine Hisense Deep Freezer, which the suspect claimed to have purchased from the money he received.”
Ciroma disclosed that efforts are in place to arrest his cohorts one Simon male and one Idris male posing as the Director of Procurement of FCTA and Personal Assistant to the Minister.
The commissioner of police, therefore, said that the suspect would be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of the investigation to serve as a deterrent to others.
Reacting to the development, Special Assistant on Media to the FCT Minister, Mallam Abubakar Sani warned Nigerians and residents of the FCT to be wary of dealing with people on social media impersonating the Minister.
Sani said that the FCT Minister does not conduct official matters through Facebook or other Social media platforms, adding that every transaction of the FCTA is done through official channels.
in his words” If anybody contacts you for contract or land offers, please walk yourselves to the office of the FCT Minister it is open, you can even come to my office I will tell you whether the offer is genuine.
” So we are calling on all Nigerians to be wary of fraudsters like this parading themselves as officials of the FCT to avoid been a victim.”
Speaking to newsmen, the suspect who apologized for the act, denied receiving such an amount stating that only N10 million was gotten from the deal and not the N52 million as alleged by the police.
According to him, he is a middle man in the alleged contract scam.
