I begin by stating that my position was neither endorsing nor campaigning for Atiku Abubakar’s presidential ambition in my last article.
I want to begin with various emotional comments most of which dwelled so much on the personality and antecedents of Atiku in responses to one of my recent articles titled
“Rather than Castigation, Condemnation and Name Calling” the same rejection and condemnation was thrown at Buhari before 2015, but when the power brokers decided to anoint Buhari in 2015, he contested and won the elections which he had serially contested and lost.
One of the comments also implores Nigerians to look beyond Atiku as an alternative to Buhari come 2019, I find this statement so hilarious, for any Nigerian to assume or believe that he/she has a say in who becomes the president of Nigeria is nothing but self adulation, even the councillors we elect in our local wards are anointed candidates of certain political godfathers.
We seem to be pretending we are ignorant of the fact that the running of Nigeria is in the hands of very few political gladiators who decides what happens when, where and how in Nigeria.
The president of Nigeria is always a product of the decision of the power brokers in Nigeria which Atiku Abubakar, whether anyone is comfortable with or not, is a key factor. Atiku Abubakar has paid his dues politically at different instances, he was said to had stepped down for Chief MKO Abiola to pick the SDP presidential ticket prior to the historic June 12, 1993 presidential elections amongst other political sacrifices.
The erstwhile customs officer has amassed so much wealth, power and influences over the decades and for any Nigerian to think the power brokers will leave Atiku out in the rain is nothing but wishful thinking.
Another high probability that Atiku Abubakar will be anointed by the power brokers is the fact that the Northern Oligarchy loves political power so much that they will do everything possible to elongate the eight year tenure of the Northern candidacy, if Buhari is presented again in 2019, the tenure of the north as the president of Nigeria will end in 2023 but if Buhari is replaced with Atiku in 2019, it will prolong the tenure of a Northern president to 2027 because Atiku or whoever the north present will spend two terms in office as president.
By the time the power brokers decides that it is the turn of Atiku to rule the country, all the agitators ranting against Atiku will become followers, yes men and women to the decisions of the power brokers, so disturbingly most of the Nigerians currently condemning Atiku will become his party agents in their wards to protect his votes by the time the whole arrangement has been perfected and monies shared to the grassroots, everyone and every arrangements will fall in place to favour the preferred candidate of the power brokers.
That was what played out in 1999, the Nigerian masses then, preferred Olu Falae to Obasanjo, the iconic military continuity agenda, and we all witnessed the number of retired military men who were in the senate and as State governors so as to forestall and checkmate the possibility of a rebellion against the military candidate who was succesfully installed as the president in 1999 and all that happened then is now history.
We are all aware of the rotational presidency policy, by the time the north completes their tenure in 2023 or 2027, it will be the turn of yet to be be determined region in Nigeria, should the power brokers in Nigeria decides that it will be the turn of the South-South to rule Nigeria again as to compensate the region for the exploration of their oil, there’s nothing any Nigerian can do if they decide to anoint James Ibori as the candidate from the South-South.
Majority of Nigerians are living in the fool’s paradise believing that there’s a divide in the political class in Nigeria, I still don’t understand why some Nigerians still allow themselves to be fooled, I always listen in amazement when some Nigerians argue so blindly that PDP destroyed our country, one will expect that Nigerians ought to had grown politically to realize that there’s no difference between the Political class, the PDP and APC is merely a figment of our Political hallucinations, there’s no single member of APC today who was not at a particular time or the other a member of PDP. I always watch in disgust when people argue or discuss the problems of the country along the party lines, when will Nigerians realize that it is the same politicians in different party names that led and kept us perpetually backward and not a particular political party?
Political liberation is never taught in any institution, it is our duty to think beyond what the political class feeds the citizens of this great country. For any Nigerian to think that there’s any difference between APC and PDP, such person should voluntarily submit himself/herself for mental evaluation. Just very recently, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, a former PDP minister of state for Defence in the Goodluck Jonathan administration, who was alleged to had shared in the arms procurement largesse and standing trial for the same crime, defected to APC and all the charges against him was dropped, unconfirmed report has it that he will be the next Lagos state chairman of the APC, and some Nigerians are still fooling themselves that PDP did this, APC is doing that and Buhari is fighting corruption.. … when are we going to wake up from our self inflicted ignorance?
If by tomorrow, the former president Goodluck Jonathan decides to defect to APC, all the noises of looting will be submerged and the bandwagon Nigerians will stop their noises about condemning GEJ and the most disturbing side of the whole thing is that; those that you expect to be politically calculative and informed are often found to be leading some of those illogical arguments, but I’ve recently cultivated the habit of smiling whenever I’m confronted with arguments or issues that appears meaningless to me.
Before our very eyes, governors and other notable politicians will begin to defect to PDP because of Atiku and some PDP members too will defect to APC and the horse trading towards 2019 will begin, many Nigerians will begin to create enmity and divisions amongst themselves by creating unnecessary problems for themselves over issues they have no single control over.
Its high time we all began to learn from events and see beyond our noses, rather than watching the Nigerian political drama as they play out and getting so emotional and carried away. We should also begin to learn how to preempt our political gladiators and prepare really hard not to be caught unaware whenever they spin their surprises.
Nigerians should form alliance against the Political class and shun political bickering by getting more reasonably involved in every movement towards political emancipation.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan recently told Atiku Abubakar to apologize and align with former president Obasanjo in order to get the PDP’s presidential ticket. Right under our noses, the 2019 political chessboard is being arranged and some of us are still calling Atiku Abubakar different names.. my simple advice for Nigerians who are still being driven politically by their emotions rather than the glaring realities and probabilities, is to get a nice reclining sofa with their favourite choice of snacks with a bottle of soda and enjoy the 2019 political cinema which has started playing out.
