Former Governor of Oil rich state of Akwa Ibom and the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio is set to dump the largest opposition party in Nigeria, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and shorten the celebration and excitement over the last few days of PDP from major defection of some leading senators, House of Reps members and three governors from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Senator Godswill Akpabio from various reports and an aide of President Buhari say he will cross from PDP to APC early next week becoming a major capture from the opposition party. This move if implemented will reverse the trend experienced lately in Nigeria. Senator Akpabio is what Messi is to Barcelona for the PDP in Nigeria and most especially in the South South region and moving to APC. Such move can see the cross carpeting of few Governors from the region into APC before the 2019 elections.
A monitored twitter handle of the crossing said, “We can confirm that, HE, Sen (Dr) Godswill Akpabio is a card carrying member of @OfficialAPCNg effective August 4, 2018. @OfficialPDPNig has lost him. Official Reception in days”.
Mr. Tolu Ogunlesi, the Head of Digital Communication of the Presidency, confirmed the meeting between the President and Akpabio today in London on his Tweeter handle, “Chief Godswill Obot Akpabio, Senator representing Akwa Ibom North West District, and Senate Minority Leader, today in London met with PMB.” twitted @toluogunlesi.
President Muhammadu Buhari is currently on a 10-working day holiday from last week Friday.
