Opalemo said this on Wednesday 20th of June 2018 during the 8th Annual Public Lecture/ Fund Raising to Commemorate the 2018 World Sickle Cell Awareness Day and therefore pleaded with the government and other concerned stakeholders for their support as this problem needs to be tackled and managed to avoid premature deaths.
The event themed Breaking the silence on Sickle Cell was a platform for Nigerians to contribute to this movement in one way or the other. with Notable dignitaries in attendance, likes of Director , Human Recourses and Administration, Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) Mr. Adeniyi Adekoya, Chairman of Eredo L/G Hon. Sabiu Omolaja Adelaja,Dr Mrs Funmilayo Olatunji Representative of former Commissioner for Health in Lagos State, Dr. Leke Pitan, Representative of Bolanle Ambode (1st lady in Lagos state) etc.
According to Opalemo who herself is a carrier, ignorance and the culture of silence have largely contributed to the rising number of carriers in the country and advised young couples aspiring to get married to ensure they check their genotype to avoid crisis like this.
Speaking with Hon Sabiu Adelaja, he appealed to the government to make provisions for those with sickle cell by making their medicines and treatments very affordable for everyone and also create enough awareness on this crisis. He also asked government to ensure that people suffering from this illness should no longer be discriminated because they are Human beings also and they didn’t ask to be in the kind of situation they are.
