Responding to reports Theresa May will be forced into dropping foreign students from official immigration figures, Liberal Democrat Leader Vince Cable said:
“For years Theresa May has stubbornly refused to accept that international students are not immigrants, while the Home Office has wildly exaggerated the number of those who overstay.
“This absurd policy has fuelled concerns over immigration numbers and done serious damage to our universities.
“It’s about time the government dropped this completely self-harming approach.
“International students generate over £25 billion for our economy and support thousands of jobs across the country.
“We should be encouraging more students to come and spend their money in the UK, instead of needlessly hampering one of Britain’s most successful export industries.”
The YES NIGERIA MOVEMENT hereby condemn in totality the gruesome murder and killings in Benue state communities and other locations in the country by acclaimed Fulani herdsmen on the new year day of 2018.
The Benue people were greeted with a horrible black New Year from the 1st-3rd of January 2018, with the killing of women, pregnant women, children and the aged.
Accordingly, the YES NIGERIA MOVEMENT wishes to state as follows:
That the people claimed to be Fulani herdsmen, from the sophistication of their arms, and professionalism of their attacks qualifies more to be addressed and declared as ” Terrorists”.
That the Federal government should without further delay declare the attackers as criminals easily in the frame as Terrorist, because their actions is more of terrorism than mere Fulani herdsmen as is been circulated.
The Benue people who are being killed should not be called peasant farmers as the killing included even small children, pregnant women and old people who can neither farm nor fight for farmland.
That more worrisome is the continued silence by the those who the electorates sees as their protectors such as the elites, traditional rulers and particularly, the representatives from the three senatorial zones and political class until so much pressure was mounted by concerned Nigerians.
That the present temporary calm in the areas is not enough to maintain permanent peace and security in affected places and areas but a thorough investigation be carried out in order to identify the real owners of the cattle, and ascertain the true identities of the attackers.
That Nigerians should know that cattle business is the same with every other businesses in Nigeria, and therefore, must operate within the laws and regulations binding on all legal businesses in Nigeria.
We called on the President as a matter of urgency, to be reasonable and considers the pains of these innocents people, and adequately compensate same for the destruction/damages incurred as a result of the attacks, and ensure that no further attacks is carried out in all affected areas in the state, or any other part of the country.
The YES NIGERIA MOVEMENT also expresses dissatisfaction with the attitude of Benue youths for stoning the Executive Governor of the state while trying to address them during their peaceful protest over the killings. The movement adviced that two wrongs can not make a right, and wishes to inform the people that no Governor will be happy for such gruesome murders against his people. We stands on the ethos of positive and progressive ways to solving our challenges.
Additionally, the YES NIGERIA MOVEMENT, hereby call on the Federal Government to halt and bring to an end the current fuel scarcity in the country, create gainful employments for the youths and improve on all social amenities, including particularly roads, electricity, water and quality healthcare delivery across the country.
The Federal Government should also enforce the reduction of the prices of commodities and transportation to make life more easy and meaningful for Nigerians.
And finally, we call on all Nigerians to put aside religious, ethnic, social and geographical differences and let’s live together in unity and progress collectively. Let’s pledge our loyalty, solidarity and commitments to making Nigeria great again.
We call on the youths to shun cultism, thuggery and all forms of vices that are detrimental to the peace and unity of Nigeria.
Conclusively, the YES NIGERIA MOVEMENT wishes all Nigerians a happy and prosperous new year, even as our hearts is with the victims of the heinous/gruesome killings and the good people and Governments of the country.
Long live Nigeria.
