Zamfara State Governor, Abdulaziz Yari has advised the Federal Government to put in measures that will enable states access the ecological fund to combat environmental hazard.
Gov Yari, who was speaking to journalists in Abuja, on behalf of Governors of South South, South East and North East, after a closed door meeting with the Finance Minister, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, decried the situation where states are unable to access the fund which has been dormant.
The Governors explained that with so many issues clamouring for attention, it was imperative that states begin to access the fund.
According to him, with desert encroachment occurring at about 10 kilometres yearly and health challenges cropping up due to gas flaring in the Niger Delta region, accessing the funds would be of immense benefit to the states.
He said: “We have a lot of funds in the ecological and Stabilization funds that are not discussed at the National Economic Council, NEC, there are also funds from donor agencies as intervention support to states in the North East to tackle desertification.
“We are discussing with the CBN Governor, the Minister of Finance, and the Minister of Environment on how to get access to the fund for the betterment of our society and our people,”
Between 2007 and 2015, the Federal Government set aside an average of N48,055 billion yearly as ecological fund.
Thus, a total of N432,502 billion accrued to the Fund during this time. Out of that amount, N245,721 billion or 57 percent of that amount was realised in four years (2011 – 2014).
