Chris Bryant MP, Labour’s Shadow Culture, Media and Sport Secretary, said:
“FIFA must cooperate with these investigations – it cannot simply be business as usual in Zurich this week. These allegations happened under Sepp Blatter’s watch. He should step aside for the good of FIFA.
“Major questions hang over the awarding of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar: abuse of workers’ rights, detention of journalists, and fan and player safety in the heat. FIFA should reopen the bidding process for 2022.
“The Government should immediately investigate whether any of the alleged activities happened on British soil or involved British banks. It is time sponsors thought about withdrawing their support unless Blatter steps aside and FIFA initiates fundamental and immediate reform.”
