He noted that the inauguration is a huge steps towards reaffirming our belief that “road traffic crashes don’t just happen, they are caused” and since their causative factors are well known, it means they can be prevented, if adequate preventive measures are taken.
He therefore charged the committee to show commitment to this onerous responsibility by working out measures that could cement the partnership of the organizations working assiduously towards the campaign for child safety and promotion of the use of prescribed child restraints . In his words,” the committee should equally commit to the improvement and coordination of effective method of ensuring standards for certifying road worthiness of vehicles in the state, I have no doubts that when these are done we would be on the path to resolving some of the challenges facing the road safety campaign in the country” he noted.
In his address the President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Engr. ADEMOLA Olorunfemi said that he is convinced that as engineers who are involved in both designing of motor vehicles and roads, the shared expertise and experience with the FRSC could assist greatly in the campaign for road safety in the country noting that from statistics, over a million families around the world lose a child to preventable injuries every year which includes injuries from road traffic accidents.
Olorunfemi stated that a recent research by some university scholars in Nigeria attributed 57% of road accidents in Nigeria to “Driver Factor” which include distracted driving and non adherence to instruction on safety devices.
He notedthat The FRSC-NSE joint committee on the use of Appropriate Car restraints for children is borne out of the desire to act positively as parents and responsible corporate citizens in bringing protection to the group often referred to as vulnerable road users adding that the committee will amongst other tasks, undertake research, advice and enlightenment on risk factors on vehicular and road usage especially as it affects the vulnerable road users.
